Tubular Transition Joints—Stainless Steel to Aluminum; A Diffusion-Bonding Technique Compared with Alternate Methods

Abstract

A new application of the extrusion process has been developed to effect solid state diffusion bonding of metals as dissimilar as aluminum and stainless steel. Bonding is effected by utilizing the high pressures of extrusion under controlled conditions to provide intimate contact between previously cleaned surfaces. Accompanied with elevated temperatures, atom transfer. across the original interface is effected, thereby creating a diffusion bond. The strength and integrity of diffusion-bonded transitions is that of the aluminum component, The diffusion-bonding process and its product are compared with alternate methods of manufacture.
