The Thermodynamic Estimation of the Surface Energy of Solids

  • L. M. Shcherbakov
Conference paper

Surface phenomena play an important part in metallurgical production processes. A detailed analysis of this part is given in a number of articles of the present collection [1], and also in text books [2–4]. The question of the numerical estimation of the surface energy of solids becomes one of considerable importance. Unfortunately, there are no direct methods of measurement similar to those known for liquids, and therefore the use of various indirect or purely mathematical methods is unavoidable. The possible methods of the thermodynamic estimation of the surface energy of solids will be discussed.
