Surface Phenomena in Ferrous Metallurgy
In many iron and steel production processes, a leading and sometimes decisive part is played by the phenomena occurring at the interfaces between the various phases. Examples of this are so numerous that it is impossible to enumerate them even briefly. The investigations of I. G. Chufarov and S. T. Rostovtsev, for example, have disclosed the important part played by adsorption in the mechanism and kinetics of the reduction of solid oxides, the decomposition of hydrates or carbonates, etc. The part played by surface phenomena in foundry practice (filling of molds with Metal. metal penetration, etc.) is also quite important.
