The main task of evolutionary ecology is to establish how the population structure of a species influences the course of the evolutionary process. This task can be formulated differently, more concretely: what is the interrelationship between the ecological and genetic structure of a population; how does a change in the population´s ecological structure affect its genetic makeup? In the process of resolving this task, the ecological mechanisms of microevolution can be completely uncovered.
