Calorimetric Calibration of the Electrical Energy Measurement in an Exploding Wire Experiment

A discussion is presented on the requirements and the methods for measuring the current and voltage during the transient discharge of a capacitor bank being employed in an exploding wire experiment. A method is described for accurately calibrating the measured current, voltage, and electrical energy by comparing the calorimetric heating of a resistance element of essentially constant resistance with the electrical energy dissipated in the element. Results show that the accuracy of the energy measurement is about 1–2%.
