The effects of gonadal hormones on serum lipids have been of great interest to the physician because of the considerably greater vulnerability of men to coronary heart disease in comparison with women, whose lesser vulnerability to coronary artery disease has been, until recently, popularly attributed to a presumed cholesterol-lowering effect of ovarian estrogen.
