Longitudinal Studies of the Effects of Oral Contraceptive Therapy on Plasma Glucose, Non-Esterified Fatty Acid, Insulin and Blood Pyruvate Levels During Oral and Intravenous Glucose Tolerance Tests

Abstract

Relative impairment of oral and intravenous glucose tolerance has been found in certain women receiving oestrogen-progestagen combinations (1–6). In a cross-sectional study of 105 women taking oral contraceptives we found 18% of oral and 15% of intravenous glucose tolerance tests to be abnormal (2). Changes of circulating levels of other compounds related to glucose tolerance, including insulin (5–7), non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) (2) and pyruvate (2) have also been noted by various investigators.
