The Clinical Pattern and Pathophysiology of Oligophrenia
The residual phenomena following intrauterine or early infections of the brain often lead to a disturbance of the mental development of the child. The term “mentally retarded child,” like the term “dementia,” can encompass essentially very different clinical forms. Such terms are often applied to certain concurrent organic diseases where features of dementia can be observed (for example, amaurotic idiocy, tuberous sclerosis, epilepsy with mental deterioration, etc.).
