Excitation Energy Transfer Processes in Metal Vapours

Abstract

One of the problems which attracted Prof.Frish’s attention was investigation of second kind collisions between atoms according to the following scheme:
$${\text{A*}} + {\text{B}} \to {\text{A}} + {\text{B*}}\bar + \Delta {\text{E}}$$

where excited atoms A transfer their energy to atoms B. As a result atoms B emit spectral lines, but atoms A are de-excited into the ground-state. ∆E is the energy difference between excited states of atoms A and B which is assumed to be negative if the excited state of the atom B lies above the level of A*, and∆E is positive if the excited level of B lies below the level of A* (fig.1). Process (1) is also called sensitized fluorescence.
