Quasi-Resonance Processes in Atomic Collisions

Abstract

Quasi-resonanceprocesses in atomic collisions correspond to low or virtually zero changes in electronic energy of colliding partners. This often results in large cross sections comparable to or even larger than the gas-kinetic ones, which makes these processes important in phenomena occuring in excited or ionized gases under different conditions. In slow collisions when the relative velocity of colliding particles is small as compared to the velocities of outermost electrons, the theoretical approach is usually based on the quasi-molecular approximation, that is on the notion of electronic states of a diatom with fixed interatomic distance.
