Lateral Species Separation in the Lipid Bilayer

Abstract

The different lipid species in a system of two different kinds of lipids arranged in a bilayer can be well mixed with little lateral species separation or poorly mixed with a large degree of excess lateral species separation according to the magnitude of the nonideal intermolecular forces between the two kinds of lipids in the surface. I shall begin this talk by defining the terms we will be using to describe the excess lateral species separation; secondly, comment on the experimental measurements required to determine the degree of excess species separation; thirdly, discuss the theory for two dimensional systems which we have developed to analyze the data; and finally talk about the ways to represent the results which will give a good physical picture of the membrane.
