Mechanical Seals

Abstract

Mechanical seals are widely considered superior to the other forms of shaft seals employed in centrifugal pumps, particularly packed stuffing boxes and breakdown-type seals. This is generally correct, but there are applications for which mechanical seals represent “too much technology,” and services for which they are not suitable (see the introduction to Chap. 8).
