Preceding chapters on centrifugal pumps with horizontal-shaft construction should not obscure the fact that many centrifugal pumps utilize vertical-shafting. Vertical-shaft pumps fall into two separate classifications: (1) dry pit and (2) wet pit. The former operate surrounded by air, whereas the latter are either fully or partially submerged in the liquid handled.
