In the history of centrifugal pump development, breakdown-type seals were employed when the sealing conditions of surface speed, pressure drop, or both exceeded the capability of packed boxes. Their greatest use came with the advent of the high-speed boiler feed pump. At the time of this development, the early 1950s, mechanical seals were not able to demonstrate the dependability necessary for such a critical application. Today the circumstances are different; mechanical seals are an equal contender for such services.
