The Coronaviruslike Superfamily

Abstract

In the past three years, the increasing knowledge of viral genome organizations, replication strategies, and nucleotide sequences has had its impact on coronavirus taxonomy. The ‘superfamily’ concept1,2, which is based on evolution and phylogeny, and which had already closed the gaps between other virus groups (e.g. the alphaviruslike and picornaviruslike superfamilies), has now been found to apply to a group of coronaviruslike viruses as well.
