Modern auriculoplasty commenced with Radford Tanzer’s work (1962), modeling costal cartilage for skeletal support. It is enthralling to recall the many hours that he spent in his carpentry cellar, molding human rib cartilage until he developed an adequate framework and became sufficiently skilled to use the technique in live patients. Today, I treasure a set of wood-carving tools that was his gift in the early years. His immaculate surgery brought a new scope to the subject. But it was especially his clear thinking, solving problem after problem in his mind and putting these solutions into practice, that opened a new era.
