The first unrelated bone marrow transplant carried out in 1973 at Westminster Hospital was possible only after considerable effort in locating the compatible donor (1). It was obvious that a panel or register of previous HLA-tested donors based on the blood transfusion service system was highly desirable. Because of financial restraints, the register was not commenced until 1975, but since then a steady input of about 5000 names yearly has been possible and the initial target of 50,000 has been exceeded.
