Metal-Salt-Catalyzed Carbenoids

  • David S. Wulfman
  • B. Poling

Abstract

The subject of homogeneous metal-salt-catalyzed carbenoid reactions has received surprisingly little attention and the major studies, originating in only a few research groups, have only appeared during the last ten years. Only two reviews have come into the author’s hands2,4 which have to any extent been devoted to the broader subject of catalyzed reactions of diazoalkanes which lead to carbenoid reactions. Numerous reviews with partial treatments exist, however. The surprising aspect of this is that metals and metal salts have been used to decompose diazoalkanes since 1906 at least5 and it was recognized by 1952 that these processes were different from those obtained by thermolyses or photolyses of diazoalkanes, which have long been presumed to proceed via carbenes.6
