Abstract
Oligomers have been primarily obtained by chemical or enzymatic hydrolysis of chitin. As opposed to previous processes, the use of hydrogen fluoride for the preparation of these compounds offers an alternative and convenient approach. Whereas the use of other mineral acids may give N-deacetylated products, depolymerisation using HF preserves this linkage. Oligomers produced from the HF hydrolysis of chitin can be separated by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) on Biogel P-4 equilibrated with ammonium acetate buffer (0.05 M, pH 4.5).
