Abstract

Scarring is an inevitable consequence of a normal healing process. Currently there is no such thing as an ‘invisible’ scar, although this may change as a result of promising research. How disfiguring a scar will be depends on a number of factors. These include crushing of the tissues (both at the time of injury and during repair), significant delays in management, contamination/infection, patient biology and surgical technique.
