The first time that I really became interested in sound was during a trip to an antique store. While perusing the aisles, I noticed a small box. I was drawn to it because of the small graphic on the side. I picked it up and opened it. In the box was a roll of paper. Still curious, I began to unroll it and what I saw changed the way I think about things. I saw a pattern of holes cut into the paper. It was sort of like Braille, only much more complex, and clearly more linear. It was just a pattern of holes in paper, and I was amazed. I was amazed because the object was a reel for a player piano, and what I was looking at was a representation of a song. These holes were sound. I was actually looking at sound. I had seen wave patterns of sound before, but this was different. I think what made this interesting was that when I first saw it I had no idea what it was.
