An Introduction to Human Cancers

Cancer cells typically contain multiple alterations in the number and structure of genes and chromosomes. The majority of genetic alterations found in cancer cells are acquired by mutations in somatic cells. A few cancers in children and young adults are caused by genetic or epigenetic defects acquired during fetal development. Germ-line mutations underlie familial cancer syndromes. These can be inherited in an recessive or in a dominant fashion.
