The discovery of America can be interpreted as the result of the efforts made by the Western European states to overcome the economic stagnation of the late Middle Ages, which had been worsened by the dynastic wars of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. These wars left the emerging monarchical states heavily in debt and with limited economic means to enjoy their newlywon political gains.
