The establishment of primary centres and primary plantations
The discovery of America can be interpreted as the result of the efforts made by the Western European states to overcome the economic stagnation of the late Middle Ages, which had been worsened by the dynastic wars of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. These wars left the emerging monarchical states heavily in debt and with limited economic means to enjoy their newlywon political gains. The gold mines which had been exploited since Roman times were almost totally depleted, money was scarce due to the lack of gold and silver, markets expanded slowly, and productivity in agriculture and manufacturing was very low.
