Angela Carter’s Magic Realism

Abstract

In this chapter I would like to approach — or perhaps one should say ‘re-approach’ — the set of questions surrounding the ‘magic realism’ of Angela Carter’s texts. Perhaps it would be useful to begin with a standard definition, or one might better say description, of magic realism, to be found in Marion Wynne-Davies’ Bloomsbury Guide to English Literature. It is:

a term applied in literature primarily to Latin American novelists such as Jorge Luis Borges … Gabriel Garcia Marquez … and Ale jo Carpentier … whose work combines a realistic manner with strong elements of the bizarre, supernatural and fantastic. This technique has influenced novelists such as John Fowles, Angela Carter and Salman Rushdie.1
