This is a book about people who have changed themselves, and who struggle to change the face of America. They are scattered throughout this country, coming from different backgrounds, walks of life, and points of view. They are known within their own communities and activist networks, but most are not famous and do not aspire to be. But they are heroes nonetheless. They are part of a little-recognized subculture, operating on the belief that dramatic, progressive change is needed in our society and willing to pay the often formidable price of being an activist in America. Over the last several years, we visited and talked to many of these people and here present their voices and stories as springboards for reader reflection, analysis, and inspiration.
