‘An exception to his broad liberal principles’

Chapter

Abstract

As a curious anomaly and an exception to his broad liberal principles, [Browning’s] punctiliousness on the subject of his and his wife’s pedigree may be worth recording. On one occasion, when marriages among people of different social positions formed the abstract subject of conversation, I heard him exclaim, ‘If ever a son of mine should so disgrace himself, I should certainly cut him off with a shilling.’1
