  • Martin Dean

Once vast areas of the Soviet Union had been occupied, by the autumn of 1941, intensified efforts were made to shoot large numbers of Jews. The detailed reports of the iitEinsatzgruppen and post-war investigations reveal a definite shift from ‘intelligentsia’ killings to large-scale actions, including women and children amongst the victims, from the end of July.1 In September and October 1941 this pattern was extended as iitEinsatzgruppen units in certain regions began the destruction of entire Jewish communities.2
