Studies on the communities of organisms living in flooded tropical rice are almost entirely devoted to transplanted irrigated fields. Therefore Heckman’s (1979) classic study of a rain-fed, medium-deep rice field in Thailand is invaluable and will be frequently referred to in this chapter. It is only in the last 10 years that we have started to look closely at the communities living in deepwater rice fields.
