An appreciation of the crucial importance of flooding patterns is central to an understanding of the deep-water rice plant and its culture. Flooding characteristics have a direct bearing on virtually all aspects of research. For instance, in plant breeding, the required rate of stem elongation or plant length is determined by the rate of water rise and the depth reached; in agronomy, land preparation and planting time depend on the time of flooding; the flooding pattern also affects the incidence of pests and diseases.
