Deepwater Rice Cultures in the Ganges-Brahmaputra Basin

  • David Catling

Accurate data on the extent and distribution of deep-water rice are obviously of fundamental importance for a thorough understanding of the crop. But, in general, official data are notoriously unreliable, are incomplete and fluctuate from year to year in this changeable environment. The key published work on rice areas by cultural type in Asia remains that of Huke (1982). These data have been updated here for most Asian countries according to the new definition of deepwater rice. Table 14.1 shows that there are about 8.33 million ha of deepwater rice in Asia and about half a million ha in West Africa.
