Agroecology of the Lower Ganges-Brahmaputra Basin
The Lower Ganges-Brahmaputra Basin of northern India and Bangladesh is the heartland of Asian deep-water rice (see frontispiece). The region accounts for about 60 per cent of Asia’s deepwater rice area and probably three-quarters of the world’s floating rice. Deepwater rice almost certainly evolved in this basin, and in many parts the crop occurs in extensive, almost unbroken plantings.
