Abstract

Ever since the invention of the laser in 1958 (see Section 6.7), and perhaps before that, scientists have pondered ways to store and process data and to communicate by using light. Today we are beginning to realize the benefits of such optical systems. Optical storage systems are capable of much higher densities than other types of systems; optical computers are potentially faster than those using electrical wiring; fiber-optic cables are capable of carrying many more messages than wire cables. Many observers say that we are passing from the electronic age to the photonic age.
