Abstract

Long idle time, overhearing unnecessary traffic, control packet overhead and collisions are significant sources of energy consumption. Efficient use of energy is the prime requirement in the development of Wireless Sensor Networks. Apart from energy-efficient, WSN should exhibit the performance with respect to delay, throughput, packet delivery ratio, etc. But there is always a tradeoff between these performance measures. This paper focuses on the behavior of WSN in terms of the aforementioned performance metrics by implementing three MAC protocols, TDMA, BMA, and SMAC. The performance of these protocols with different performance metrics is calculated with NS-2 simulator.
