Abstract

The mid-1990s saw the rise of a vibrant people’s movement against a proposed steel plant at Gopalpur in Ganjam district led by the local CPI leadership under the banner of Ganatantrik Sangram Samiti. The local population that is dependent on kewda cultivation and fishing organized to challenge the setting up of this joint venture of TISCO and Nippon Steel in Japan. The chapter describes how the movement was successful in thwarting Tata’s plans in saving a region that is both highly fertile and densely populated. However, the land acquired by Tata has been converted to a multiproduct SEZ, and the hardships of the local people are different and many.
