Abstract
Rice and coconut are the two most important crops grown in the tropical coastal areas for two different purposes. These two crops require abundant rainfall and hot humid climatic conditions but differ in their soil conditions. Rice is the staple food of more than half the world’s population, whereas coconut is the most important plantation crop providing livelihood to millions. Therefore an attempt was made in this chapter to document the information pertaining to rice and coconut genetic diversity with special reference to the coastal areas so as to understand the current status of these crops in the tropical world and its potential use as a variety to improve crop production and as a donor for producing varieties tolerant/resistant to the emerging adverse situations including climate change. Information on collection, conservation, and characterization of rice and coconut germplasm is also provided.
