The Establishment of Interdisciplinary Comprehensive Diagnosis Model for Ocular Ischemia Syndrome

Abstract

Ocular ischemic syndrome is a clinical syndrome characterized by a series of insufficient blood supply-related brain and ocular symptoms caused by chronic severe carotid stenosis or occlusion, and atherosclerosis is the most common cause. Ocular ischemic syndrome, apart from its ocular ischemic sign, is often accompanied by hypertension and diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and other systemic diseases, and 5-year mortality rate can be as high as 40%, with cardiovascular events being the most common cause of death. Therefore, prevention of more severe ischemic cardiovascular disease while reducing the impairment of visual function is particularly important. A multidisciplinary comprehensive diagnosis and treatment model, based on the complexity of integration, is the direction to solve the ocular ischemic syndrome problems. After reading this chapter, we can better understand the new concept of clinical multidisciplinary comprehensive diagnosis and treatment mode. In the case of ocular ischemic syndrome, the diagnosis and treatment should be discussed and made by ophthalmologist, neurologist, cardiologist, neurosurgeon, vascular surgeon, and interventional radiologist among other teams and departments together, so that the patients can get the best treatment and life-threatening systemic ischemic disease be avoided or reduced while the ophthalmologist is saving the visual acuity.
