Abstract
As stated in Chap. 2, in addition to the representational meanings (analysed in Chap. 4) which focus on the semiotic interplay between visual images and subtitles in stills and the compositional meanings (examined in Chap. 5) which concentrate on the intermodal relations between images and subtitles presented in consecutive filmic units (such as scenes, sequences and generic stages), there is a third type of meaning in subtitle translation, namely interactive meanings, highlighting the interplay between subtitled films and viewers. This chapter presents the analysis of the interactive meanings in subtitling by referring to the data of the ten blockbusters: Finding Nemo, Mulan, Frozen, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, Toy Story, Inception, 2012, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, War Horse and Skyfall 007. They are all produced in the English language and subtitled in the Chinese language, enjoying great popularity in mainland China.
