Abstract

The study focused on the relationship between high school students’ HIV/AIDS knowledge and their stigma-related attitudes/perceptions of the PLHIV; to identify their stigma-related attitudes toward PLHIV and HIV/AIDS; and to recognize differences in knowledge and attitudes by gender, age, ethnicity, religious groups, and SES. This multi-country cross-sectional research utilized 43 schools, with a convenience sample of 1,508 high school students from Guyana, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Antigua and Barbuda. The study utilized an online questionnaire focusing on HIV/AIDS knowledge and HIV/AIDS-related stigma as well as on socio-demographics (gender, age, ethnicity, religion, and SES). Statements in the questionnaire on HIV/AIDS knowledge were referenced from Carey and Schroeder’s International Standardized Questionnaire on HIV and AIDS Knowledge. The nine statements in the questionnaire on HIV/AIDS-related stigma were referenced from Kalichman, Simbayi, et al.’s International Standardized Questionnaire on Stigma: AIDS-Related Stigma Scale. Stata, Version 13, facilitated the processing and analysis of the questionnaire data. The study applied these statistical protocols: Descriptive statistics; Histogram; QQ plot; T-test; Chi-square; the Bonferroni Post hoc test; Pearson product-moment correlation; Linear regression; and Logistic regression. The tests used a significance level of p<0.05.
