Economic Development in the Districts of India

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
The Demographic and Development Divide in India

Abstract

A number of studies have examined interstate variations in economic development; however, a limited number of studies have focussed on the districts of India. This chapter examines the spatial pattern of economic development in 640 districts in India in three dimensions of economic development-living standard, occupation and household assets. An Economic Development Index (EDI) and a Relative Development Index (RDI) are used to rank the districts according to the level of economic development. The spatial pattern of economic development index and its association with total fertility rate (TFR) and under-five mortality rate (U5MR) is assessed using Moran’s I statistics.

Results suggest that the districts in India exhibit a positively skewed level of economic development and high degree of clustering. Of the 640 districts, the EDI value was lower than 0.30 in 91 districts, between 0.30 and 0.45 in 200 districts, between 0.45 and 0.60 in 194 districts, between 0.60 and 0.75 in 102 districts and above 0.75 in 53 districts. Moran’s I statistics of EDI was 0.69 suggesting high and significant clustering of EDI in the districts of India. The variations in RDI were also large across the states. The clustering in EDI was intense in the poorer state of Odisha and developed state of Maharashtra and Karnataka. Based on the results, we suggest that districts with lower EDI value be accorded high priority in developmental planning within and across the states of India.
