Abstract

Although many peasants went to work in the cities, some, like Xia, stayed in the countryside and developed profitable businesses. After leaving school, Xia had his first job with the Family Planning Commission. When a matchmaker approached the family about him marrying Lian, this required the division of the family property. His father-in-law gave Lian and Xia a substantial gift for their wedding as well as introduced Xia into his business. The skills and experience he gained allowed Xia to develop a successful business of providing agricultural products to farmers.
