Epidemiology of Breast Cancer: Current Figures and Trends

Abstract

Worldwide, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death among females. Breast cancer is the fifth most common cause of death from cancer overall, with 522,000 breast cancer deaths estimated to have occurred in 2012. Although it is still the most common cause of cancer death in women in developing regions, it is now the second most common cause of cancer death (after lung cancer) in women in developed regions. The chapter will discuss the epidemiology including the incidence rates, mortality rates, and Human Development Index associated with breast carcinoma.
