Abstract

One of the most undesirable properties of concrete is its brittleness and it is due to its very low tensile strength, some measures are needed to be adopted to overcome the deficiency. Studies are carried out on the use of steel fibers in concrete and a considerable amount of research has been directed toward studying the various properties of concrete as well as reinforced concrete with the addition of steel fibers. The construction industries need to find cost-effective materials to increase the strength of concrete. Hence an attempt has been made in the present study to use waste crown caps which are cut manually into steel fibers and its influence on the concrete strength when steel fiber is added in dosage of 0.5, 1, 2, and 3% by weight of cement with super plastizer. The investigation was done on M35 mix and the tests were carried out as per recommended procedures by relevant Indian standard codes. The compressive strength test, split tensile strength test, and flexural strength test were conducted and compared with conventional concrete for 7- and 28-days curing, study’s results showed an increase in compressive strength about 48% for 3% fiber content, split tensile strength about 169.87% for 1–2% fiber content and 61.53% for flexural strength.
