Abstract

The complications following major surgery are not uncommon, and these often produce considerable morbidity, prolonged hospital stay, delayed access to postoperative adjuvant treatment and even mortality. It is important for the surgeon to be aware and inform the patient and relatives accordingly. While it may not be possible to discuss all the complications, it is still useful to mention the common general and specific complications that might occur in the intra- or postoperative period. General complications relate to risk of undergoing any major surgery, whereas, the specific ones relate to the particular surgical procedure [1, 2]. A complication can thus be described as an adverse event which affects recovery of the patient.
