Abstract
Clay is an important raw material in preparing drilling fluid, and its major component is clay mineral. The structures and basic characteristics of clay minerals are closely related to the performance of drilling fluid and its control and adjustment. Therefore, the basic structure and characteristics of clay minerals should be clearly understood. In this chapter, basic structures, types, and properties including electrical property, adsorptivity, expansibility, and cohesion are introduced.
