Abstract
Algae are thallophytes and are a large, heterogeneous and polyphyletic group of simple plants and lack true roots, stem, leaves. Algae contain the pigment chlorophyll which is their primary photosynthetic pigment. The mechanism of photosynthesis in algae is similar to that of higher plants but they are generally more efficient converters of solar energy. Due to their simple cellular structure, they have more efficient access to water, carbon dioxide, and other nutrients because the cells grow in aqueous suspension. The characteristics of algae are presented in this chapter.
