Abstract
The UK Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) ‘Thy’ terminology for reporting thyroid FNA cytology is a well-established national and also an international terminology system for cytology reporting which aligns with other international terminology systems: The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid FNA Cytopathology and the Italian, Japanese and Australian systems. There are now multiple peer-reviewed publications in the English language literature that utilise the UK RCPath Thyroid FNA terminology, and publications have now confirmed good interobserver reproducibility and its validity for patient management with risk(s) of malignancy and positive predictive value(s) established by audit for all ‘Thy’ categories of FNA, Thy1–Thy5. In the UK RCPath system, multidisciplinary management is emphasised, and the UK RCPath ‘Thy’ terminology is embedded in the multidisciplinary management and treatment recommendations in the 2014 British Thyroid Association Guidelines for the Management of Thyroid Cancer.
