Extremophiles in Eurasian Ecosystems: Ecology, Diversity, and Applications

Abstract

Microbes belonging to the phylum Actinobacteria are prolific sources of antibiotics, bioactive compounds, and industrially relevant enzymes. There are tremendous diversity and novelty of Actinobacteria; the applications of halophilic Actinobacteria toward the industrially and medically important metabolites and enzymes are gaining increasing attention by the scientific community. A large number of novel compounds and enzymes from halophilic actinomycetes have been isolated and characterized from various geographic regions around the world. In this chapter, we focus on the occurrence, characterization, and the specific metabolites concerning different industrial applications of the relevant biomolecules/bioactive compounds for agriculturally, pharmaceutically, and biotechnologically application are discussed. Halophilic actinomycetes may also serve as useful models for the production of essential metabolites and enzymes with respect to stress response.
