Abstract
This chapter intends to elaborate how the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) member countries (particularly Russia, Central Asian countries and Ukraine) fit into China’s global agricultural policy as the potential overseas “breadbasket” for the country. While wheat is certainly the key crop that attracts China’s interests in the agricultural and food sectors of the CIS, other agricultural products, such as non-GMO corn and soybean and meat products, are also targeted by China. In addition, food has become a key driver behind China’s Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB), and is increasingly a crucial part of China’s efforts to push forward the implementation of SREB.
