Abstract
The source and formation of large inclusions in the working layer of a centrifugally cast high chromium steel composite roll was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The results showed that the large inclusions were mainly composed of Si, O and Na, being compounds of SiO2–Na2O–Al2O3–MnS. The inquiry of the source of Na, as well as the investigation into centrifugal casting process indicated that the large inclusions might be attributed to the refractory coating sprayed on the pouring system and the inner surface of iron mold. The refractory coating was eroded by molten steel during centrifugal casting process and then underwent complicated chemical reactions with molten steel. In the present work, the measures are put forward to prevent large inclusions in the working layer, including reducing the involvement of refractory materials and promoting inclusions floating.
