China’s Economic Integration and New Chinese Immigrants in the Mekong Region

Abstract

This chapter examines the new migration from China to the Mekong region in the context of China’s increasing politico-economic influence in the region, and the special relations between the Mekong countries and China. Recent migration to the CLMV (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam) countries is framed in a historical context against recent economic and policy trends. Chinese migration to each of the CLMV countries is outlined with argument for coherent national immigration policies that take into consideration their social and economic development needs and interests.
